Need opinions on how to set up my duck decoys.?
There are a few situations that i would like some fellow hunter's input on. First off i have 36 mallard decoys, 6 pintail decoys, 2 mojo, 1 swimmer, 6 green-winged teal, and 6 wood duck.
I would like to get some advice on how to set up in these situation
Big water shoreline(its a bay on lake michigan)
A medium size river that boarders a marsh
And national/state wetlands...mainly marsh and some dead flooded timber.
any help would be greatly appreciated
I hunt flooded marshlands alot so that is what I will comment on. I try to put my decoys in two offsetting symmetrical "j" shapes with the hook of the j's closest together and closest to land. I do leave some space for ducks to land. The best luck I have had with the mojo decoys is to keep them close to the shore and low to the water. They really bring the ducks in, but if you have them high in the air or out too far in the decoys I have seen the ducks flare on them a number of times.
I also set 3-4 floating goose decoys a little further out and to one side of the duck decoys. I also try to keep all the decoys of the same species close together.
One additional tip, if you don't have to worry about the wind, put out just enough string to hold the decoys in place. Too much string and the dog is going to get snagged up every time.
