a question about laying porcelain tile?
i am laying tile over 3/4 inch floor boards and have some questions. the guy at lowes never mentioned anything addressed in the following questions:
1) i've already screwed the backerboard onto the floor, but some internet sources say you need to glue the board down before this step. do i need to pull the backerboard up, apply adhesive, and put the backerboard back down?
2) sources say you need to put cement screws into the backerboard at every 8 inches. does this mean in a grid formation or just along the floor joists at every 8 inches?
3) some sources say i need to tape up the backer board seams with fiberglass mesh tape. is this necessary?
As with projects the finished job is only as good as the foundation. You did not mention how large an area you are doing. If it is a small bath glue is not needed.
You must screw 8" s on the joists.
The seems need to be taped .
Keep in mind the floor needs to be sound before applying tile, bounce around on it if it moves or squeaks address the issue .
You should be alright as long as the sub floor was in good condition. Just keep in mind that if the floor can move than tile will pop loose, if you are going a large area like a kitchen and the floor has any bounce in it you really need to do a mud job and float the whole floor.
