How small do dogs have to be before they need a harness? Cocker Spaniels?
I know that some of the tinier breeds such as dachshunds and chihuahuas practically require walking in a harness due to their size, but how small does a dog have to be for that to apply? Is it only certain breeds, or is it a weight/height thing?
Would cocker spaniels need a harness or are they fine in a collar like normal dogs?
for the record, i hate harnesses.
They're great for sled dogs, but I don't see how you can effectively walk your dog with one.
In my opinion it has to do with the windpipe. If your toy breed doesn't pull on a leash then your fine to put all those cute little collars on them. If you have a larger breed dog. Cockers and labs and such that pull, then I would put a harness on them also. I had years ago a Golden that I would have in a collar to walk and then when she would pull me on the rollerblades, I had a big bold pink web harness for her. I also used the harness when we were in boats or around water cause of the lifting properties. I use harnesses on my Malti-poo right now, cause I got her @ 2 ish years of age. I use the harness to walk her. I have a really pretty pink collar that she came ffrom the dog pound with and let her wear it as jewlery only. Training your medium breed to walk politely on a collar and leash will give You the freedom of choice. Their windpipes are strong enough to withstand some pressure, but as in any animal.. us too 
lots of pressure can make us and them cough and gaggy.
