Dachshunds were bred to hunt and dig out badgers. Since they are of the hound group their noses are very keen on picking up scents. Their bodies were bred to be low to the ground to pick up scents, powerful front legs for digging, and a long body to wiggle down a burrow and to get out quickly.
The mini dachsunds were later bred to do the same with rabbits...
