How do you make a puppy walk on a leash?
I so hope somebody can help! I'm desperate. I have a ten week old Golden Doodle, have had him for about ten days. He's a great puppy but he absolutely refuses to walk on a leash. He just stops dead and refuses to move. We've tried dropping the leash, luring him with treats, praising him lots when he does move, giving him a nudge in the bum, we've even gotten a friend with a dog to come by to see if that would encourage him. Nothing is working!! He just won't move until we're headed home - then when he knows we've started to turn around to go home, he breaks out into a full run and is actually pulling on the leash, mad to get home. Why do you think we're having this problem and how do we fix it? We will take him to obedience class but they don't take puppies until they're four months and I'm not sure what to do until then. Thank you so much for your help!!
There's a reason that obedience classes don't start until puppies are 4 months old--puppies aren't ready for high-level training until then. You are expecting too much from your puppy too soon.
What type of collar are you using for your walks? You should be using a harness, a Gentle Leader, or (very carefully) a choke chain. A puppy, especially a 10 week old puppy will not respond well to a leash attached to his regular dog collar.
